Today is Earth Overshoot Day. Which means that we have ingested all the resources than this planet can renew in a year. So today we are living on credit, and whatever we are doing right now, we are stealing it to future generations.
Of course, we are not operating on a level playing field. According to the Global Footprint Network, Australia uses 5.4 planets, USA: 4.8 and Switzerland 3.3. This is the Top 3 but the best students are at the rear of the pack. China consumes 2 planets, Brazil: 1.8 and India 0.7. Every year, this not-so-happy day comes earlier. In 1970, it was December 23rd. In 2030, it will knock on our door by the end of June.
Earth was bearing all the resources and they were free of charge for all species. There was enough for everyone. Greed and lust for power have decided otherwise. We have become slaves and partners in crime. We no longer control a system that we created. Could human nature be incompatible with Nature?
